Auxiliary Information

The Pender Harbour & District Health Centre Auxiliary formed in 1976 to serve two objectives:

  1. To assist in the fostering of good relations between the Pender Harbour & District Health Centre Society (referred to as the "Health Centre") and the public.

  2. To support the Board of Trustees of Pender Harbour and District Community Health Centre, by a vote of the Health Centre Auxiliary membership, to provide funding when required which will enable the Health Centre to operate effectively for the benefit of the community. The funds may be used for either capital OR operating (including salaries) expenses which are not provided by the Provincial Government or by any other source of income (Grant funds, Area A tax base, private donations) and are to be used expressly for the health and welfare of this community.

The Auxiliary meets on the last Monday of each month, except July and August, at 2:00 p.m. at the Legion in Madeira Park. Membership is $1 per year.

Our Auxiliary is a working group of volunteers. Our primary source of income is from the Bargain Barn Thrift Store located in Madeira Park.

The Bargain Barn Thrift Store is operated entirely by volunteers and is open on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 - 3:30. It is also open Monday and Tuesday for sorting, pricing and stocking, but not to the public. The Auxiliary is always looking for volunteers who will spend some time helping at the store. Whether it's three hours or ten hours a month, there is always something needing to be done.

The Bargain Barn operates on this policy:

Our primary goal is to provide to the community of Pender Harbour the finest and friendliest Thrift Store we can operate, using volunteers, for the purpose of receiving and recycling donated merchandise. The purpose of this volunteer work is to raise money to support The Pender Harbour & District Health Centre.

The Auxiliary provides two bursaries to our local high school students:

  1. The Muriel Cameron Bursary, which consists of two $2,000 bursaries paid annually to graduating students who are entering a health related career

  2. The Linda Curtiss Student Citizenship Award is one $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to students from grade 9 to 12 who have performed volunteer or community work in the Pender Harbour area and, during this time, applied leadership and inter-personal skills which will be measured in order to qualify. This volunteer or community work is to include working in any organization which has been approved by the Auxiliary for the Health Centre.

In honour of our past Presidents, the Auxiliary has created a PRESIDENT'S LEARNING CENTRE at the Health Centre. It's purpose is to provide a place where someone can go to learn about a specific medical condition. Current tapes and books will be available, as well as other learning aids.
